Our shop is located within the Avèze visitor centre in Riom-ès-Montagnes and continues the tradition of welcoming visitors to taste and buy our emblematic Cantal aperitifs.
In 2020, it was remodelled to promote new products from Avèze: AB certified organic Avèze, Avèze bitters with either orange or lemon flavour, Avèze’Roll, our base for a perfect Spritz Auvergnat, Avèze blackcurrant liqueur to make delicious Avèze’ Cassis and last but not least, the traditional Avèze gentian eau-de-vie.
You will of course also find our leading and timeless gentian liqueurs: the classic Avèze 15°, the CGA gold-medalled Avèze 16° and the authentic Avèze 18° for our fine gentian connoisseurs …
Should you have an adventurous palate, we also propose a selection of products from various French terroirs allowing you to discover other regional flavours:
Each year, for the past 12 years, the inhabitants of Picherande in the Puy-de-Dôme zealously organise a festival to honour gentian with numerous activities and exhibitors. Over three days, the European Gentian Festival welcomes craftspeople, producers and processors but also nature lovers and more specifically gentian fans as well as just come curious passers-by.
Despite the current situation, the festival was able to take place on 14-16 August 2020 thanks to several preventive measures which were put in place: obligatory masks for both exhibitors and visitors, a specific one-way circuit and a decrease in the number of exhibitors compared to previous years.
We were lucky enough and excited to be able to participate in this 12th edition of the Gentian Festival in Picherande where visitors were able to (re)discover this acclaimed, gentian-based liqueur from the Cantal, certified as a special product from the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne, in three distinct varieties: Avèze 15°, Avèze 16° and Avèze 18° to satisfy all those who like a bitter or gentian taste! All our newest drinks were at our stand: certified organic Avèze, Avèze’Roll used as a cocktail base for Spritz Auvergnat, and last but not least the Avèze Bitters which add an orange or lemon flavour to your beer depending on your taste.
There was also entertainment proposed during this special weekend dedicated to the Queen of the Mountains: folklore music, puppet workshops for kids, an exhibition on gentian and also several hikes among the gentian to better understand this plant with multiple virtues! We hope to see you next year in the heart of the Picherande village to celebrate the Queen of the Mountains at the European Gentian Festival!
Avèze was founded in 1929 by Emile REFOUVELET who strived to place the Cantal at the core of his products to please as many bitter connoisseurs as possible through his skill in the art of distilling and maceration. This is why three new products are in the works to be presented on our shop shelves for the end of the year.
First up is a pastis with complex overtones of spices, plants and of course, anise. By mixing it with our gentian liqueur, you can make a fresh and authentic cocktail: the Pastis of Volcanoes. In a pastis-type glass, pour 3 cl of Avèze Pastis then 1 cl of Avèze Gentian liqueur. Top it off with some ice-cold water and then enjoy its taste, imagining the chilly stream waters of Auvergne …
There is then a gin which is an ode to nature with its bouquet of 13 chosen plants such as juniper, violet, rosemary, or even coriander … using this gin, concoct a fragrant cocktail with typical gentian aromas: the Gin of Volcanoes. First of all, pour 3 cl of Avèze Gin then 1 cl of Avèze Gentian liqueur. Finish off with some tonic water and add some lemon zest for decoration and ice cubes for freshness.
Last of all, since our gentian roots come from the Regional Nature Park of the Auvergne Volcanoes, we have created the Volcano Liqueur! This green liqueur promises you a scent-laden and flavourful journey to the heart of the dormant Auvergne volcanoes with its recipe made of wild gentian (from the Regional Nature Park of the Auvergne Volcanoes, of course) and natural plants. Enjoy this Volcano liqueur as a digestif at the end of a meal, neat or with ice.
You’ll find these three new drinks at the end of 2020 at the Avèze visitor centre in Riom-ès-Montagnes!
